‘I struggled to keep from smiling on the call': Remote employee offered an 8-month severance package just days before quitting when their company initiates a return-to-office mandate

  • My company's new return- to-office policy got me a nice severance package... just days before I was going to quit anyway.
  • I felt like people here would appreciate this story. The timing is unbelievably perfect, I still can't believe it myself. Some time ago, my company merged with another company,
  • and things changed very quickly. The whole vibe of the place changed in an instant and became endlessly bureaucratic and routine. They told us to prepare for a
  • mandatory return-to-office decision at any point this year. I live more than an hour and a half away from the office, so this was not going to work for me at all. I started updating my
  • resume and networking, and a few weeks ago, I got a great offer after several interviews. The job isn't fully remote, it's hybrid, only 3 days a week, and the commute is just a fifteen-minute drive from my house.
  • My whole plan was to give them my notice at the beginning of next week. I've been with this company for over 12 years, so I didn't want to burn any bridges and
  • intended to hand over my work smoothly and without any issues. I was even planning to take a two-week vacation before starting the new job.
  • I opened my laptop on Monday morning and found a mandatory meeting on my calendar called 'Org Update'. I joined the call and saw my
  • manager and someone from HR. They announced that the return-to-office decision was now official and would start in 30 days. And because I live outside the 'permissible distance radius', I had two
  • choices: either agree to this commute every day, or take a package and leave amicably. They offered me a severance package of 8 months' salary plus my full bonus, and gave me 48 hours to decide.

  • Honestly, I had to struggle to keep from smiling on the call. I was literally a few days away from resigning and would have gotten nothing but a 'thank you' from them, and here they were offering me 8 months'
  • salary to leave. If this had happened a week later, I would have already resigned and walked away empty-handed. So now, I'm going to take about a month off to relax
  • before starting my new job, which pays significantly better, and I'm waiting for a nice wire transfer to hit my account soon. Unbelievable.
  • Pgapete1960 · This news has made my day. After listening to the shit going on in this world for the last few years.......i smiled at your news.
  • Good for you, you must be smiling all the way to the bank at the mo and will be for a while. Enjoy your month off and what a story you have to tell people for the rest of your life. Bravo.
  • Silly_Position... Literally just had something extremely similar happen to me! Good luck at the new job
